Samburu National Reserve

Samburu Reserve, established in 1985, is an arid, hilly region with riverine forests, doum palms, acacia woodland and scrubland, offering a dramatic and rugged landscape in a rather remote location of Kenya – which is precisely the attraction of this reserve – fewer tourists in a wildlife rich, desert like setting amidst a colourful local tribe. Samburu National Reserve is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in the dry northern reaches of Kenya.

The Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu

The Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu offers a permanent water supply that’s like a magnet for the numerous animal species, the river is the lifeblood of the area, especially during the dry season when it draws wildlife to its waters – and its shady trees – the wild animals in Samburu National Reserve include plenty of wildlife. Giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck and zebra (including the endangered Grevy’s zebra) from the surrounding savannah plains. Lion, leopard and cheetah are also quite easy to spot, thanks in part to the lack of grass cover

Wildlife in Samburu National Reserve

Samburu is also home to large herds of elephants, and the reserve is well known for providing the opportunity to see wildlife that only lives in the dry north of Kenya. Be on the look out for gerenuks – these odd, yet distinguished looking, gazelle have long necks, and stand on their hind legs to feed.

Samburu National Reserve also offers superb bird-watching (around 365 species have been recorded) with numerous weaver birds, the martial eagle and the blue legged Somali ostrich.

Across the river is the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. A bridge connects the two, and they are often grouped together by tour companies. Nearby is the swampy wilderness of the Shaba National Reserve.
