Volcanoes National Park

• Volcanoes National Park, or Parc National des Volcans, occupies a spot in the northwest corner of Rwanda.
• To say it is stunning is an understatement.
• The steep slopes of the volcanoes are covered with dense green rainforest, a dramatic location for what is an unforgettable experience for those lucky enough to do it trekking to see the fascinating mountain gorillas.
• The park is a safe haven for both the gorillas and the rare golden monkeys which you can also see here - comical fellows who gather together in large troops, leaping from tree to tree, keeping still just long enough for you to get a photograph.

Although the magnificent gorillas steal the show, they also share the Volcanoes National Park with the charming, cheeky and rare Golden Monkey - again a permit is required in advance. Further local attractions include guided birding and nature walks, meeting with experts, tea and coffee tastings, plus enriching community village visits.

Most visitors arrive in Rwanda via Kigali International Airport (KGL), which is about 10km/6mi from the capital, Kigali. There are no scheduled domestic flights to Volcanoes National Park. Most people opt for a tour around the country with a 4x4 and driver-guide. Volcanoes NP is located in the north of the country 130km/81mi from Kigali, 70km/43mi from Gisenyi and 12km/7mi from Musanze. All participants in any activity at the park must report to the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7am. Therefore, it is recommended to stay close to the park, or in nearby Musanze.
